Hadjod Chila: Traditional Remedy for Joint Pain. [Updated document, year 2009]

Pankaj Oudhia

Few months back one old woman came to my home and asked me permission to collect specific herb from my home garden. When I permitted her she directly reached to the Hadjod plant climbing on Mango tree and collected few succulent stems. I asked about its use. She refused to tell any thing. After that visit now she visits at regular interval to collect the Hadjod stems. From her walk I understood her problem related to joints. I suggested her to use Hadjod for the same problem. How? I suggested her to prepare sweet dish Halwa and consume it once in a week. I have mentioned this method in my previous articles at Botanical.com. She can also use special oil prepared from Hadjod externally in treatment. After getting the details she disclosed that she is using Hadjod for joint pain especially for bone pain common in old age. But her method of use was totally different. She informed that she use it in combination of Urd (Black Gram). In Chhattisgarh 'Chila' is well known traditional preparation. She prepares 'Chila' using Urd and add fine pieces of Hadjod stems. This special 'Chila' is consumed daily during attack and twice in a month in normal days. It was really surprising to know that she has never taken any modern drug for this trouble and consuming Hadjod with faith.

Hadjod is well known herb in Chhattisgarh. The natives and traditional healers have rich traditional medicinal knowledge about this herb. The bonesetters use it both internally as well as externally. It is used in treatment of many other troubles also. The special oil having Hadjod and other herbs is used popularly in Chhattisgarh. Natives plant it in home gardens as ornamental herb. The natural forests are also having rich population of this herb. I have mentioned in previous articles that many wild animals especially deer are aware of its medicinal uses especially in case of injuries.

After getting the information from the old woman without any delay I informed about this new way of Hadjod use to the traditional healers having expertise in treatment of bone related troubles. They tried it and found it more useful in most of the cases as compared to the routine formulations. After getting confirmation from the traditional healers I decided to document this valuable knowledge without any delay.

The old woman is Uriya and migrated from neighboring state Orissa. She informed that much of her childhood has been passed in Gariaband region of Chhattisgarh. From her father she got the information about this unique use. She has treated many family friends with the help of this herb. She told me that in modern day no one believes in traditional medicine. Most of the patients are taking painkillers. It reduces the pain for a while and the problem emerges again later. I informed her about my ongoing mission to document the traditional medicinal knowledge about herbs. And asked about her name. Hesitatingly she said 'Shiv Uriya'.

Through regular visits to different parts of Chhattisgarh I am informing many traditional healers about this special 'Chila'. After few months I will visit to them again to get their experimental results. Keep reading my research articles to get more details.

When I discussed this preparation with the Traditional Healers having expertise in use of Cissus quadrangularis, many of them suggested use of Chausela in place of Chila. In Chhattisgarh, Chausela is prepared from rice and in case of this Hadjod Chausela they suggested use of Medicinal Rice. “There are many useful Medicinal Rice types but Laha Gondi is best among these. You can get this Medicinal Rice directly from farmers. Try to get pure rice grown organically.” They informed in detail.

“In case of many diseases especially skin diseases like Leucoderma patients are advised strictly not to take Black Gram in any form. For such patients use of Chausela is beneficial. I would suggest use of Medicinal Rice Machhimudi in combination with Laha Gondi in order to get more promising effects. Based on the condition of patients both can be mixed in different proportions. If trouble is old with much pain then proportion of Machhimudi should be kept at higher side. It can be taken round the year but as we always suggest instead of taking one type of medicine up to long time patients must take different medicines. In many cases we use combination of six to ten types of Medicinal Rice. Patients having Type II Diabetes with joint troubles are given such combinations.” The Healers of Gariaband region suggested.

During visit to biodiversity rich Niyamgiri hill region I discussed this use with the Traditional healers. Many of them were happy to know that natives are still using ancient formulations for health troubles. They suggested that Chausela prepared from Medicinal Rice must be served on Koriya or Korai leaves in order to get more promising effects. Korai leaves are of religious importance especially in Orissa.

“For maximum effect the patients have to follow some instructions. While using Hadjod one must not take cow ghee in large quantities. Among vegetables avoid use of Baigan and Alu.” The Healers of Durg region added.

During recent visit to the Healers I presented them special Chausela. Along with Hadjod I added 15 other herbs in it. All herbs were compatible to Hadjod and many enhance its performance. At first Healers tasted it and after getting information about ingredients they agreed to use it for their patients. Instead of adding all herbs at a time many of them suggested increase of contents one by one. “Herbs must not affect the taste of Chausela. If it remains normal Chausela then patients will take this tasty medicine sincerely.” The Healers suggested.
