UNIQUE TRADITIONAL ALLELOPATHIC KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HERBS IN CHHATTISGARH, INDIA: EFFECT OF EXTRACT.901-1000. Bemchi on different herbs. (Compilation of Extended Summaries) [Updated document, year 2009]

Pankaj Oudhia

Abstract

Chhattisgarh, a newly formed state of India, is rich in bio-diversity. The natives and traditional healers are having rich traditional medicinal knowledge about herbs and insects. In order to enrich the herbs with medicinal properties, to protect it from insects and to provide new vigour to the herbs, the traditional healers are practicing traditional Allelopathic knowledge since generations. The healers use both leachate and extracts but prefer the use of leachate. The leachate and extracts are collected at specific day and time. In order to document the traditional Allelopathic knowledge about medicinal trees in Chhattisgarh, series of Ethnobotanical surveys were conducted since year 1994 in different parts of Chhattisgarh.

In the series UNIQUE TRADITIONAL ALLELOPATHIC KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HERBS IN CHHATTISGARH, INDIA: EFFECT OF EXTRACT, an effort to document this knowledge has been done.

TRADITIONAL ALLELOPATHIC KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HERBS IN CHHATTISGARH, INDIA: MY OBSERVATION AND EXPERIENCES.

For the first time Molish (1937) coined the term "Allelopathy" which reference to all biochemical interactions (stimulatory and inhibitory) among plants, including micro-organisms. The natives and traditional healers of Chhattisgarh are not aware of this term but they are practicing the Allelopathic knowledge to enrich the plants with medicinal properties, to repel the insects, to give new vigour to diseased plants, to increase the crop production etc. Since the year 1994. I am continuously documenting the Traditional Allelopathic knowledge and this year (i.e. 2004) decided to put all the information among the world community with the hope that new researchers will take interest in this new field and give recognition to this knowledge as separate discipline.

The traditional healers informed me that by simply observing the natural arrangements of plants in any ecosystem, one can get the complete picture of Allelopathic potential of individual species. They claimed that there are specific plants in surrounding of specific plants and this arrangement remains continuous upto hundred kilometers. The natives and traditional healers simply exploit the observations they have experienced during visits to forests. The Traditional Allelopathic knowledge is transferring from one generation to other and in Chhattisgarh most of the traditional healers are not only aware of this knowledge but also practicing it in their routine life. Its popularity among them clearly indicates its efficacy. In general, the traditional healers keep this knowledge as secret knowledge. When they approach to the herbs before specific days in order to apply the leachate, they utter mantras. Majority of natives believe that Mantras make the plants medicinally rich. But as Allelopath, I have noted that the application of leachate is having the real effects. I personally feel that the research on the effect of Mantras on plants is also an important field on which our new researchers can focus their research.

At first I hesitated to put the information related to Traditional Allelopathic knowledge among the world community but ten years of surveys and huge amount of data motivated me to start documentation of this important traditional knowledge. At Botanical.com, over 7000 research articles are now available on this aspect. In order to make these research articles readers friendly, I have written it in specific format (i.e. in form of fact sheets). These seven thousand research articles are like a drop in ocean. In Chhattisgarh we are having thousands plants and you can imagine the quantum of information available with us. As the expert traditional healers are getting old, it is essential to document their knowledge without any delay. After crossing 10,000 research articles (once it was the dream for whole life) now I feel that I have done nothing in terms of total knowledge present in this small part of the world.

In early days, the farmers engaged in organic farming were practicing Traditional Allelopathic knowledge for crop production. In many parts of Chhattisgarh, the use of plants extract and leachate is still popular. In most of the cases, the Baiga, performs this spraying operation with the help of broome. But now a days this application is mere a formality. In the modern era of chemical farming, the leachate and extracts have lost its miraculous effects. The crop plants have lost its resistance whereas the insects are becoming more and more resistant. The chemical farming practices have made this traditional knowledge as obsolete knowledge. This observation motivated me to document the information without any more delay.

In my Allelopathic research I have noted that the extracts perform in more better way than the leachate but the traditional healers give preference to the leachate. They have no specific explanation but many senior healers of Pendra region informed that extraction is the process that damages the plants and the plants feel (?)Uneasy(?) when the extracts of another plant are applied. Through the Ethnobotanical surveys conducted in different parts of Chhattisgarh I have noted that there is a much variation in methods of leachate collection. Many healers perform the leachate collection during first monsoon rains. They collect the leachate in bulk and store it, by adopting traditional methods, for use round the year. Other healers collect it round the year as per their ease and prefer to use the freshly collected leachate. They have specific time i.e. morning hours, evening hours etc. for the collection. I have mentioned this specific time in research articles. I have observed during the surveys that the same leachate is used in different ways in different regions but as I always write that the healers have no interaction among them and they are not at any forum, they have no access to the information available with other traditional healers. My surveys are filling this gape.

As mentioned earlier, much knowledge is still undocumented. My wish is to continue this documentation process. But I also wish to conduct laboratory and field trials to provide scientific base to this traditional knowledge. Both assignments at a time are not possible. I am in dilemma. Through this article I would like to request the Allelopathic researchers to come forward and start systematic research on this aspect. Most of the traditional healers are with us and in case of any detail, the researchers can ask them without any problem. The traditional healers are confident with this knowledge. They do not feel any need of scientific confirmation but by providing scientific base to this knowledge, we can make this knowledge, more popular and credible. In seven thousand research articles on Traditional Allelopathic Knowledge, I have given all the available information but when I visit to the healers, I get additional information. I will try to add this additional information in present research articles, time to time.
